How to Make Passport Size Photos at Home

Most passport and visa forms ask for a photo of an exact size, printed on small photo paper — not on A4. You can make that photo at home with a clear phone photo and a printer, if you choose the right size and print at the right setting.

Step by step

1. Take a clear, front-facing photo in good, even light, with a plain light background, looking straight at the camera, with your face fully visible. 2. Open the Passport Size Photo Creator and upload only your own photo. 3. Choose the exact size your form asks for — for example 35 × 45 mm for Pakistan, the UK and Schengen countries, or 51 × 51 mm (2 × 2 inch) for the USA. 4. Choose your photo paper: 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) is the most common, 5 × 7 inch (13 × 18 cm) and 3.5 × 5 inch (9 × 13 cm) are also used. 5. If the photo is sideways, rotate it, and use Fit inside if any part of your head is being cut off. 6. Preview the sheet, download the PDF, print it at 100%, and cut along the dashed guides.

Common passport sizes

35 × 45 mm — Pakistan, UK, Schengen / EU passport and visa, the most common size. 51 × 51 mm (2 × 2 inch) — USA passport and visa. 33 × 48 mm — China visa. 30 × 40 mm, 25 × 35 mm and 35 × 35 mm — various visa, ID and form photos. Always use the size written on your own form, not a size you guessed, because sizes differ by country and by application.

How many photos fit on one sheet?

On 4 × 6 inch photo paper, a 35 × 45 mm photo fits 6 times (2 across × 3 down), and a 51 × 51 mm photo fits 2 times (1 across × 2 down). On 5 × 7 inch paper, a 35 × 45 mm photo fits 9 times (3 across × 3 down). The tool shows the exact count for the size and paper you choose, and adds more sheets instead of shrinking your photos.

The setting that matters most

Print at 100 percent, or Actual Size, on the same photo paper you chose in the tool, with margins set to None if that option is available. Do not use Fit to Page, because that setting shrinks or enlarges the sheet and the photo will no longer be the exact size. After printing, check one photo with a ruler before you cut all of them: a 35 × 45 mm photo should measure 35 mm wide and 45 mm tall.

Common mistakes to avoid

Printing on A4 instead of photo paper, printing with Fit to Page on, using a dark or busy background, a sideways or tilted photo, a face that is too small in the frame or cut off at the top, and shadows on the face or background. If any of these apply, take a new photo in better light rather than trying to fix the old one, because this tool does not edit your face or appearance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I print passport photos on A4? No. Passport photos are printed on small photo paper such as 4 × 6 inch or 5 × 7 inch, not on A4. Will this photo definitely be accepted? No tool can guarantee that. Acceptance also depends on background, lighting, face position and the official rules for your application, so check the official photo guide for your form. Is my photo uploaded? No. The photo stays in your browser only. Close the page to remove it from this page. Can I use someone else's photo? No. Use only your own photo.
