How to Count Words for an Essay or Assignment

Most assignments, job applications, and online forms have a word limit, and going over it can cost marks or cause a form to reject your text. Counting before you submit takes less than a minute.

Step by step

1. Write your text in your usual app, then copy it. 2. Open the Word Counter and paste it. 3. Read the word count and the character count. 4. If you are over the limit, cut whole sentences, not single words here and there, so the writing still reads naturally. 5. Count again after editing, because a small edit can change the count more than you expect.

What counts as a word?

In most counters, words are separated by spaces. A hyphenated word, a number, and a short abbreviation are usually each counted as one word, but different schools and forms can count differently. If a limit is strict, aim a little below it, for example 490 words for a 500-word limit, so a different counting method does not push you over.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text saved? No, on EasyToolPoint the counting happens in your browser and your text is not sent or stored. Does it count characters with spaces? The tool shows characters so you can check both kinds of limits. Why is my count different in another app? Different apps treat hyphens, numbers, and line breaks differently. Use the count of the app or form that will judge your work when the limit is strict.
